Seychelles, a beautiful archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, is attracting more and more visitors every year. The latest statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show that the country has welcomed 221,862 visitors from January 1 to August 20, 2023, which is a six per cent increase compared to the same period in 2022.
The NBS also reports that the week of August 13 to August 20 saw 6,924 arrivals, a two per cent increase from the corresponding week in 2022. The main markets for Seychelles are still Europe, especially France, Germany and Russia, followed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Most of the visitors come to Seychelles for vacation, as the country offers stunning beaches, diverse wildlife, and a rich culture.
The tourism sector is a vital pillar of the Seychelles economy, contributing about 25 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) and employing about 30 per cent of the labour force. According to the tourism department’s website, the sector generated an estimated USD 530 million in revenue as of July 31, 2023, while the visitor satisfaction rate was 89.5 per cent as of August 22, 2023.
The tourism department has set an ambitious goal to maintain or surpass the 330,000 arrivals mark by the end of the year, despite global challenges such as the economic downturn in Europe and the high inflation rate. The department also aims to reach the $1 billion revenue mark, which would require the collaboration of all the key stakeholders in the industry.
Industry players have been urged by the department to provide more quality services and add-ons and to diversify the product offering for clients. The department has also implemented various initiatives to promote Seychelles as a sustainable and responsible destination, such as the Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Label (SSTL), the Seychelles Blue Economy Strategy, and the Seychelles Tourism Master Plan 2023-2032.
2022 was a record-breaking year for Seychelles, with 335,000 arrivals, surpassing the previous record of 330,000 in 2018. The current trend of arrivals suggests that Seychelles is on track to achieve or exceed its target for 2023, and to continue its growth as a leading tourism destination in the region.
