Mahé, the island that hosts the majority of the Seychelles’ population and is by far the largest and most developed of the Seychelles, is also where Victoria, the nation’s capital, is located. As a result, it is the busiest of the Seychelles and has the widest range of resorts and activities, including hiking opportunities through the arid interior of Morne Seychellois National Park, pristine diving sites and snorkeling in or just beyond glorious bays caressed by exquisitely multicoloured waters. The Victoria Clock Tower, built in 1903, is a copy of a clock that was first erected in London, close to Victoria’s station. It was commissioned by the governor of the Seychelles at the time as a memorial to Queen Victoria, who had died two years previously after 63 years of rule.
To learn more about the 300-year history of the Seychelles, go to the National Museum of History. The museum is tiny but extremely well-researched, with concise summaries and descriptions of artifacts in both English and French. The museum tour lasts around an hour and is the ideal method to learn about the long history of the nation. Admission is 150 SCR.
The National Botanical Garden, which has been around for more than a century, has a large collection of endemic and exotic plants, spices, fruit trees, and Seychelles native orchids. You can see a vast colony of bats if you look up to the tallest trees. The enormous turtles, some of which are more than 150 years old, are without a doubt the garden’s most interesting feature. Come inside to give them food and pet them!
Spending time exploring the stunning white sand beaches that line the island of Mahe is perhaps one of the greatest things to do when visiting. Driving south from Grande Anse, all the beaches are beautiful. Up north, Beau Vallon, a stunning long stretch of beach with a lot of clubs, restaurants, and hotels, has become one of Mahe’s most popular neighbourhoods.
With its vast menu, popular restaurants like Bravo, which is situated on Eden Island Marina, want to satisfy your palate and allow you to enjoy a lovely night. Another great dining option is Restaurant Del Place, which has a romantic atmosphere and is located right on the beach, surrounded by fine sand and green ocean in all directions.
