Dead Battery in Your Rental Car – What Now?

Any car, even a new one, can fail. Learn what to do if your rented car breaks down. Here are three critical steps to follow to keep safe and resume your trip as soon as possible. Breakdowns aren’t just inconvenient. They can be a major hazard to everyone in the automobile as well as anyone passing by. Learn how to be safe if your rented car breaks down.

Get to safety

The first thing you should do if your rental car battery dies and your car breaks down is move it out of the direction of incoming traffic. If there’s a hard shoulder or a parking lot you can pull into, that’s fantastic. If there isn’t one, pull over as far off the road as you can. In any case, keep your front wheels pointed away from the road. Turn on the hazard lights and get everyone out of the car and away from the road. If you fear it is too unsafe to get out of the car, make sure everyone is wearing their seatbelts, turn on your hazard lights, and call for help right away.

Get help

After ensuring that everyone is as secure as possible, the next step is to contact a breakdown service. Most rental companies include a phone number for roadside assistance (but depending on what went wrong, you may have to pay for it afterwards). Check your rental agreement for the phone number.

Get your vehicle repaired and back on the road.

The breakdown service will either be able to repair the vehicle or will be required to tow it to a garage. If your rental car cannot be fixed in a reasonable amount of time, the rental company will arrange you a replacement car if possible. Remember that unless you purchased roadside assistance, you may have to pay for any repairs and/or towing (which you can do while you were booking your car, before pick-up, or at the counter). In the event that your rental car battery dies, it is usually a quick replacement ensuring you are back on the road!
