Get to safety
The first thing you should do if your rental car battery dies and your car breaks down is move it out of the direction of incoming traffic. If there’s a hard shoulder or a parking lot you can pull into, that’s fantastic. If there isn’t one, pull over as far off the road as you can. In any case, keep your front wheels pointed away from the road. Turn on the hazard lights and get everyone out of the car and away from the road.
