Praslin Island is heaven for an adventure seeker and nature lover. With scenic drives and easy road access to nature reserves, hiking trails, and serene beaches, with various guided tours available, you will never lack a bird-watching experience.
Birdwatching tours take you to such magical islands where you can view the birds, see the gigantic Aldabra tortoises that the Seychelles are so famous for, and observe the beauty of nature. Whether you join a guided tour or explore the island solo, a rental car makes hopping between destinations and ferry points a breeze.
The Seychelles has a number of bird species that occur nowhere else on the planet. Bird enthusiasts usually visit the Seychelles in April or May for breeding or from May to September for nesting. The majority of the bird species migrate between September and October, so be sure you visit the island before these feathery creatures go elsewhere!
Birds in Seychelles
Seychelles also boasts the largest populations of seabirds in the world. Aride, Cousin, Aldabra, and Cosmoledo islands harbour different seabird colonies from tropicbirds to Frigatebirds. The world’s largest colony of Sargasso shearwater and Lesser noddy can be found on Aride Island. Of the 242 bird species recorded in Seychelles, 65 are known to breed here, and only 12 are officially recognised as endemic. With only about 12 endemic birds, the majority are found on Praslin and Mahé – two islands easily explored by car.
Some of the island’s birds range from the Seychelles Magpie-Robin to Seychelles Scops Owl, and there are many more such as the Aldabra Drongo, Seychelles Swiftlet, Seychelles Warbler, and Seychelles White-eye. One of the rarest birds of Seychelles is called the Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher.
The Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve is located on Praslin, and a must-visit destination easily reached by car. Home to the country’s national bird, the Seychelles Black Parrot. Grey-brown and monotypic, the parrot is found endemic in Praslin only, a very nomadic bird, surviving on fruit in noisy flocks. It is the sole indigenous parrot species to still be found here, and it is also a flagship species of this World Heritage Site listed by UNESCO.
