Christmas is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start planning for the best part of December: Christmas lunch! Seychelles is a culinary mecca, home to some of the best fusions of Creole and international cuisine on the planet. There’s nothing quite like the smell of garlic, thyme, and salty ocean air on a sunny Christmas day. Once you have Christmas in Seychelles, you’ll find yourself back for more year after year.
Let’s discuss the best ways to have a very merry Creole Christmas: a dining experience (or three) in Mahe and Praslin, the Seychelles’ foodie hubs.
Christmas Lunch in Mahe
Seychellois and Mahe food is a blend of African, French, and Indian influences, making for an interesting blend that prizes seafood, fruits, coconut, and grains to create aromatic and hearty meals–one of the best parts of Mahe.
Christmas BBQ by the Pool at DoubleTree
The DoubleTree by Hilton Seychelles Allamanda Resort and Spa is hosting a Christmas barbeque at one ‘o’clock at their Ocean View Bar. The invitation says it’s to feature ‘a delicious spread of grilled delights and seasonal favourites.’
We recommend calling the DoubleTree resort to book in advance.
Kannel Restaurant
The Kannel restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort in Grand Anse offers everything from familiar favourites like wagyu cheeseburgers and linguine to Creole dishes like baked whole fish and octopus curry. Kannel is open for lunch from noon (12 pm) to 4 pm.
If you’d like a beach day barbeque, head to the sands of Petit Anse for a Mexican barbeque. Enjoy freshly grilled meats, tacos al pastor, and ‘Chef Carlos’ cabrito recipe’.
Remember to book in advance!
Some smaller local restaurants serve special Christmas day menus that include staples like ham and roast vegetables–you might call and ask whether they’re open for Christmas lunch.
Christmas Lunch in Praslin
Praslin is known for its lively celebrations and love for festivities. Its locals love a good Christmas lunch and take pride in cooking up a tropical storm.
A Legendary Christmas Lunch
The Constance Lemuria Hotel restaurant, The Legend, is open on Christmas Day. It’s open for lunch from 12.30 pm to 5.00 pm. The Legend is known for its new variety of buffet-style food, from Indian to Arabian to Chinese to Western every night.
Pirogue Restaurant & Bar
Pirogue has rave reviews for its Creole Christmas lunches, including tuna steak, octopus curry, and plat de jour. Pirogue is renowned for its prompt service, friendly staff, inexpensive food, and tasty terrace cocktails.
It’s nicer on the terrace, so call and book in advance to secure your spot in one of Praslin’s best Christmas Day restaurants.
Les Lauriers
Les Lauriers has been hailed as the best restaurant in Praslin. It has a wonderful Creole-style buffet with generous portions, great flavours, and great views. Be sure to try their parmesan-crusted fish and coconut mousse.
As always, make sure you call to confirm they have availability. If you’d like to find other options, call and ask Seychelles hotel restaurants whether they have anything on for Christmas Day–most do.
