The island of Mahé is the largest in the Seychelles archipelago and home to about 90% of the population of Seychellois people. Upon arriving in the Seychelles, you will reach the Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) located on Mahé.
When you rent a car from Kreol Services, it will be delivered to the airport. A representative holding a personalised placard will be there to greet you and assist you in getting behind the wheel so you can begin your journey.
Offering some incredibly scenic drives, the roads on the island weave through lush jungles, granite mountains, and along the turquoise coastline. Head straight to Victoria, the capital city of the island, to make your way to some of the most memorable and unmissable drives on Mahé.
1. Sans Souci Road
This is the most iconic scenic drive on Mahé, which stretches from Victoria to Port Glaud via Morne Seychellois. You will see the dense rainforest, misty mountain views, and panoramic vistas of the ocean. Some of the stops along this road include Mission Lodge Viewpoint, boasting breathtaking views over the west coast. You can also stop by the Tea Factory to learn more about Seychellois tea and enjoy a hot cup with a view. Driving in Seychelles is an adventure in itself!
2. West Coast Road
If you take this road from Victoria to Baie Lazare, you will drive via Grand Anse along the wild, untouched western coastline. The scenery features long palm-fringed beaches, granite boulders, and traditional Creole structures. Some stops along the way include Beau Vallon, which is a great spot to grab a bite to eat or swim. Port Glaud and Grand Anse are some of the quieter beaches you can visit, while Anse Soleil and Anse La Mouche are more popular for their postcard-perfect beaches.
3. East Coast Road
When you head to Anse Royale from Victoria, you will be greeted by scenes of calm turquoise bays, small villages, and coconut groves. This scenic drive provides visitors to Mahé with a peek into the life of a local. A great place to stop and have a drink and learn about local history is the Takamaka Distillery. East Coast Road will lead you to one of the most popular spots for both swimming and snorkelling, Anse Royale.
4. South Coast Road
Continuing towards South Coast Road, which is the most secluded part of the island, via Quatre Bornes, you will be on your way to Anse Intendance. Another stop before you arrive at one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, you will pass by a hidden gem, Anse Forbans, which is one of the wildest, untouched beaches on the island’s southern coastline.
When driving on the island of Mahé, it’s important to note that you need to drive on the left side of the road, filling up on fuel before remote drives as fuel stations are limited, and be cautious, as the roads are often narrow and winding. You can also expect sudden showers when driving in the mountains.
